New Steam Hardware? Yay!

Hello Everyone,

A very rainy weekend for us up here in Pretoria (RIP my washing) but a perfect time to stay inside and play with our gadgets wouldn’t you say? Probably the biggest news to come out in the last week was Steams’ cheeky announcement of not only the long-rumored “Project Deckard” VR headset, but two other exiting pieces of hardware; the 2025 Steam Controller, and the Steam Machine.

First things first, the new VR Headset – The Steam Frame

Successor to the still popular Valve Index, the new headset features high resolution (2160 x 2160 LCD) and high refresh rate (72-144Hz) screens as well as a super cool new tech called “FOViated Streaming”, which allows the headset to stream higher bitrate images to the areas of the screen where your eyes are looking!

Next Up – The Steam Machine

This “GabeCube” intends to bring 4K 60FPS Gaming (With FSR) to your living room while allowing you to use your entire existing Steam/Epic/Etc with you. Not much is known about the real-world performance of the unit at this stage, but it stands to go toe-to-toe with the Xbox Series X and PS5.

Finally – The 2025 Steam Controller

Resembling a smooshed up Steam Deck, complete with dual touch-pads and customizable back buttons. It uses a wireless “puck” and promises latency free gaming up to 5m away, has TMR Joysticks for ultra-precise (and drift free) operation, as well as Gyro aiming.

My biggest question is around SteamOS, which will be launching in its most “Desktopish” environment yet. Hopefully this means we may see a full open platform release in the future.
